Improved UI & UX for the client’s state-of-the-art diagnostic system that helps surgeons perform the angiogram procedure more efficiently with faster and more accurate decision-making.

The Project

The CathWorks FFRangio™ System is a state-of-the-art diagnostic system that combines routine angiograms with advanced computational science to help cardiologists in their decision-making during the medical procedure.

My task was to improve the Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) by creating a more user-friendly UX and UI. This required a redesign of the system’s information architecture and the visual warning mechanism as well as the creation of a time-saving navigation.

The Challenge

The system generates a ton of information during a routine angiogram, but it needs to be organised and displayed in a visually accessible way without creating cognitive overload that might distract the surgical staff from vital information needed to make the right decision during the procedure. Things can get incredibly chaotic and tense if the procedure goes wrong or complications arise, which is why easy visual access to the right information is critical to prevent bad outcomes.

The Outcome

In collaboration with Studio Primak, I designed a colour-coded system that guides surgeons and keeps them on the right path during the angiogram procedure, with a clear set of visual alerts in a 3D simulation of the coronary tree to warn the surgeon of detected blockages or abnormalities in the blood vessels. This provides the surgeon with enhanced visibility of what’s going on in the vessels for faster and more accurate decision-making.
Natural Mapping
Mapping is the relationship between control and effect. The idea is that with good design, the controls to something will closely resemble what they affect.

Here we have created a feedback representation of the C-Arm machine to improve the experience, prevent errors, and expedite the interaction process when selecting elements
